About MAUC
Mexican American Unity Council—Empowering communities through housing, education, and economic opportunity.
Mexican American Unity Council
MAUC is committed to improving the quality of life in our vibrant community by offering a wide array of critically needed community place-based services.
The Mexican American Unity Council, Inc., a mission-driven, private tax-exempt community development corporation, was established in 1967 and is headquartered in San Antonio’s Westside. MAUC is a multi-service organization with a mission to empower our communities through housing, education, and economic opportunity. San Antonio, with its rich Mexican-American history, is home to a population of 2.6 million, of which 64% are of Latino origin.
MAUC is committed to improving the quality of life in our vibrant community by offering a wide array of critically needed community place-based services. Our success is due to the understanding of culture, tradition, and linguistic heritage of the diverse individuals we serve. MAUC is committed to creating and preserving livable and sustainable affordable housing and has firmly established itself as a vital entity bridging our communities with our ever-changing world.
MAUC has pursued opportunities to improve the lives of its community by addressing basic issues: education, affordable housing, and economic opportunity. Approaches may change with economic and political climate, but the ability to exist and persist for over 58 years attests to our commitment.
So, MAUC and all it embodies, continues the voyage many have traveled before. Much has been accomplished; but the truth remains, our work is not finished.
We need to address the implication and impact of generational poverty and economic segregation. Texas has been competitive in job growth but with high school drop-out rates still exceed 50%, we are risking future ability to compete; over 70% of our service area remains below the poverty level; and while we’ve achieved great strides in securing political representation, not all voices are being heard or needs being met. As MAUC Center has personified strength, endurance, and perseverance, we strive to carry out this embodiment throughout of journey, as our tagline reads, Building Stronger Communities.

MAUC traces its origins to the civil rights movement of the 1960’s
History

Recognizing that these hurdles imposed a critical barrier to the mobilization of an effective civil rights movement, a group of Mexican Americans in Washington, DC formed a coordinating body that could provide technical assistance to existing Hispanic groups and bring them together into a single united front.
In the early 1960s, this organization, NOMAS (National Organization for Mexican American Services), met with the Ford Foundation to present a funding proposal. The meeting contributed to a Ford Foundation decision to finance a major study of Mexican Americans, the first of its kind in the United States.
This research led to a series of organizational meetings among Chicano leaders, and it was from these meetings that the Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC) emerged in San Antonio, TX, in November 1967 along with Chicanos Por La Cause (CPLC), Mexican American Community Programs Foundation (MACPF), The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU), Spanish-Speaking Unity Council (SSUC), Mission Development Council (MDC), and OBECA/Arriba Juntos Center.
These seven organizations in three states became the first affiliates of UnidosUS (formerly, National Council of La Raza (NCLR), a Mexican American-controlled nonprofit organization).
