Partners
MAUC in collaboration with the City of San Antonio has developed programs that will enhance parental involvement, family strengthening and neighborhood development by providing classes related to physical and emotional development, addressing school readiness and literacy, nutrition and financial literacy. Achieving these goals will ensure the at families in MAUC’s communities’ will become stronger, more stable, and self sufficient. In addition, MAUC aims to provide early-on school readiness for children Pre-K thru Kinder.
Program Descritpion
The target population served by the Mexican American Unity Council, Inc. (MAUC) includes families at La Escuela de las Americas, families who reside at one of two affordable housing communities owned by MAUC and families from surrounding communities who seek social service assistance. The majority of the families be serviced are Hispanic, bilingual, and live on low to moderate incomes. Many of these families experience unemployment or underemployment have limited access to affordable health care and pay more than 30% of the total household income on housing.
Programs
MAUC will survey the target audience annually and provide services and educational classes as determined by the families needs: Programs that MAUC offers free of no charge are:
- Partners in Print – helps parents become partners with teachers in teaching young students literacy skills
- Parents as Partners – teaches parents how to advocate for their children’s education
- Financial Literacy – creates self-sufficient, money-wise families.
- GED and ESL classes – promotes life-long learning and improves adults’ employment
- Outside Referrals – as needed, typically to agencies such as Legal Aid, Mental Health, Utility Assistance, Medical Insurance (Chip Program), Food Resources (Food Bank), or the Food Stamp Office
- Literacy Tutoring – offered by trained AmeriCorps member to school-age children
- Nutrition Education – promotes families’ health and wellness
- Parenting Classes – teach a variety of issues focusing on parenting children through difficult issues such as peer pressure, drugs, sex, or self-esteem issues
- Free Adult and Youth Art Classes – call for information
