2012 Albert A. Pena Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

photo_brisenoAlex Briseño retired as City Manager of San Antonio in March 2001 after serving almost 11 years in office.  He managed the administration of a full-service municipal government and oversaw an annual budget of $1.2 billion.  He supervised the activities of all City departments and 12,000 employees serving a community of more than 1.1 million residents.

During his tenure as City Manager of San Antonio, Mr. Briseño worked under four mayors and 39 city council members.  His career with the City began in 1977 as Assistant to the City Manager and in 1980 he became Assistant City Manager.  Prior to his career in City government, Mr. Briseño earned the rank of Captain while serving in the U.S. Army, including as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of the Army Medical Research & Development Command in Washington, D.C.

Since his retirement, he has served short-term appointments as Interim President of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Interim President/CEO of the San Antonio Water System, Interim President/CEO of the San Antonio Technology Accelerator Initiative (SATAI), and Interim Executive Director of the Brooks Development Authority.  Currently Mr. Briseño is a Professor of Public Service in Residence at St. Mary’s University where he teaches graduate courses in Public Administration.  He also serves as a member of the Board of Managers for the Bexar County University Health System.  In 2011 he completed a serving a 5 year term as Chairman of the San Antonio Water System.  Mr. Briseño is the recipient of numerous honors from the community that he has served including the TCMA Legacy Leaders Award, UMAST Distinguished Achievement in Public Service Award and the Lewis Legacy Award for Distinguished Service in Urban Affairs from Trinity University.  Mr. Briseño is a native San Antonian and a graduate of Central Catholic High School.  He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Master of Arts in Urban Studies from Trinity University.  Mr. Briseño and his wife Mary have two children and are blessed with a grandson, Gabriel.
